Research experience? Shadowing?

Hi all, I'm trying to get a part time research assistant volunteer position in some sort of surgical subspecialty. I am familliar with the US medical training system, and over there this would be pretty easy. There are loads of incredibly busy residents who are expected to conduct research in addition to clinical responsibilities and they are more than happy to recruit pre-meds / med students to help them with some data entry and let them shadow them / observe surgeries in return. Is this sort of thing possible in the UK? It seems the NHS is a bit stricter when it comes to patient confidentiality, CRBs, etc etc. Is it even possible to shadow over here in the same way? What is my best way forward? Thank you all. J
