Untangling the Influence of Sex Hormones on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Women

We read with interest the recent publication by Wang et  al1 on the influence of sex hormones and reproductive factors on NAFLD prevalence in women. The intersection of reproductive health and liver disease, including hormonal influence on NAFLD, has gained recognition as the marked rise of NAFLD in young adults and the implications of NAFLD on women’ s reproductive health is acknowledged.2 Although the current study has added to the expanding literature, we do note some aspects of defining risk factors and interpreting estrogen exposure that may benefit from further endocrine-based characterization.
