Contribution of Vitamin D –Binding Protein Polymorphism to Susceptibility and Outcome of COVID-19 Patients

We read with interest the paper of Bychinin et al. (1) in which they reported their investigation of the predictive value of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). More in detail, serum 25(OH)D concentrations ≤9.9 ng/mL on admission could predict in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients. Here, we highlight the importance of the vitamin D–binding protein (DBP) polymorphism in the interpretation of the reported results.
