Promise and Potential of Video Capsule Endoscopy in the Emergency Department

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) represents a novel strategy to perform rapid diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract bleeding, portal hypertension, non-cardiac chest pain and other disorders. There are limited numbers of US EDs that have used VCE on trial and protocol-based patient studies but the results are encouraging. Given the expanding role of advanced diagnostic and point-of-care testing in the US EDs, VCE has great potential for future evaluation of ED gastrointestinal complaints.
