Holla from Njeku!

Njeku, a small but beautiful village nestled in a valley at the base of Sakila Mountain. While our time here has been short, the past week has shown great promise for our impact to be anything but small. The village leaders have been helpful, and it seems that most of the people we come across now recognize us as more than just those new visitors in town. As always, Sunday is a great day for worship, and we used this to our advantage. Understanding our mission, the VEO (Village Executive Officer) kindly sent out letters to the various village churches so that they would mention our testing day during their announcements section of their service. The church we have attended for the past two weeks once again welcomed us with open arms. More than others, it seems they have truly accepted us into the community. They have shown this through their willingness to listen, their excitement to join us in song, and even through providing us with some gifts. The real “test” of how our word has spread came on our testing day this past Wednesday (June 25th). It was a hard day, but a rewarding one. Challenges come in all shapes and sizes, as responses from people not wanting to know their status to not wanting to be seen entering our tents. But, from the help of our coordinators, our fellow SIC volunteers and teaching partners, and our homestays, we were still able to go throughout Njeku and gather those who wanted to come get tested and even convince others that we truly are doing this...
