Bonga Update

Habari zenu? (How are you?) This past week in Bonga, we’ve been busier than ever. We started teaching at the government schools ¬¬– Bonga Secondary School and Bonga Primary School. We finished our curriculum at Hayatul Islamic Secondary School. Not only did we meet with each form for the last time, we also started a Peer Education club. This club is supposed to continue teaching fellow students and their local community about HIV and AIDS. We prepared them to take on this task during their orientation that consisted of making a constitution, voting for officers and doing practice teachings. When we return from break, we will watch their final teachings and hold a mini graduation ceremony. The week at Hayatul ended with our first testing day ¬– we brought a mobile testing unit to the school and offered free, fast and secret HIV tests to all students and teachers. Some of the students, especially the younger ones, were super excited to get tested, while some needed a bit of encouragement. All of our efforts paid off and we ended up getting 275 students and teachers tested which exceed our goal! We have three more testing days set up for the community of Bonga when we return from break and hope to get over a 800 people tested in total! Though our schedule was a bit hectic with all of the school teachings, we still dedicated time to teaching in the community as well. We had a village meeting scheduled three different times this week and it was canceled every single time....
