Should people at low risk of cardiovascular disease take a statin?

A BMJ analysis article leads with the question: Should people at low risk of cardiovascular disease take a statin?  The authors disagree that individuals with a 10 year risk of less than 10% would be better off not popping a statin because it doesn’t  return overall health benefits in this population.  And the authors say argue that “ the evidence does not show that the benefits of statins in low risk patients outweigh the harms and that the advice for treatment of this group should not be changed.” Our very own luisad has written about this subject in a column for The Guardian and in the subtitle it says that for low-risk patients, perhaps taking a statin isn’t the best preventative measure, when most CVD us caused by lack of exercise, poor diet and smoking. Are statins used as a quick fix? What do you say to patients?
