emergency nursing #101.

Received the following question today from Sophie: Love your blog, been a follower for a long time! Just writing for some advice.. So I’m an EEN, studying B. Nursing (graduating next year) I’ve been hiding in Theatres for the last 5yrs doing Anaesthetics, I have just accepted a job at a major Sydney ED as I needed a little change.. Anyways, do you have any advice on textbooks, literature or anything that I can use to make me a half decent ED Nurse? As in ED Nursing 101.. I have played in ED previously, but that was a while ago.. Thanks Sophie….a good question. To tell you the truth, if I spin around and look at the bookshelf behind me, there are not a whole lot of text books to be seen. To keep up on the latest emergency nursing education topics and best practice guidelines I mostly feed from the (almost overwhelming) wealth of quality information now available on-line. My number one tip for ED Nursing 101 is not to stress it. Do not place too much pressure on yourself to become super-nurse by your 3rd shift. I have worked thousands of shifts now and I am still trying to improve my clinical practice. Get out on the floor and OBSERVE. Feel out the uber-nurses on your own unit and befriend them, study them and ask them what resources they rely on. It is my personal experience that you will probably learn more on the floor than off it. If you surround yourself with excellence, you will naturally soak it into your own work.
