September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day
National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day is a day set aside each year to recognize the impact of HIV/AIDS among older adults. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in HIV-1-Infected Adults and Adolescents, in the United States, approximately 30% of people currently living with HIV/AIDS are 50 years of age or older. The number of older adults with HIV is growing for two reasons:
Antiretroviral therapy, which helps people infected with HIV live longer
An increase in newly diagnosed infections in people 50 years of age or older
