Magnetic inhibition of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators during LASIK procedures: Let us have a change of heart

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) have been tremendously useful in decreasing complications and death in patients with heart failure or arrhythmia disorders. It has been suggested that for every 9 devices implanted, one death and three hospitalizations for major cardiovascular events can be prevented.1 Patients with ICDs pose a challenge for surgeons, however, because a shock delivered from the ICD could potentially produce substantial patient movement on the operating table, significantly increasing surgical risk.
