Hope

Hope, Just for Today It springs eternal, has many seekers, has many friends, in our ally in times of need and a foundation of our sobriety. Without hope recovery would be restless and unfulfilled and, in fact, were we not to cultivate it then sobriety might be impossible. Hope starts us into action and loads us through the darkest day which we know must pass. If needs be, it is our hourly encourager, neutralising the negatives, emphasising the positives. Nobody is hopeless, for hope lies within us all, it is the precursor of sobriety and at the same time it is the attainment of sobriety from which we stride out to further hopes and achievements, once thought impossible. Hope stems the tide of despair that is so often the lot of the practising alcoholic. Hope for the sober alcoholic thrives on tea with lots of sugar and it relishes the thought of the next AA meeting. It longs for the hello and the cheery smile and the undisguised sincerity that comes our way from another alcoholic. Hope cannot change the world, nor family habits, nor other people’s politics, but it can encourage us to change ourselves from within. Nobody can tell what follows hope. Armed with hope, we can stay away from that first drink we can live a day at a time. With hope we can leap forward or gingerly try out the things we hear and talk about in AA.
