Sonographic Evaluation and Detection of Pediatric Hematometrocolpos

Hematometrocolpos is the presence of blood in the uterus and vagina and is a rare gynecologic pathology in pediatric patients. Often, symptoms of hematometrocolpos are mild and not diagnosed until the onset of puberty. A case is presented of severe persistent hematometrocolpos in a female pediatric patient. The patient experienced urinary retention and abdominal distension due to the markedly enlarged vagina. The patient was primarily followed with sonography, although other imaging modalities were used as necessary to properly diagnose and manage the patient, who was successfully treated with vaginoplasty.
