Q&A: What should you do for someone who tries suicide alone?

I was looking through some old posts and found this question. I thought it was a good one so I wanted to post an answer here. The question comes from ‘HelpOneAnother’: I asked earlier about my husband. Now he came over and told me he took a lot of pills 4 nights ago to commit suicide, but just got sick. I just feel empty, but didn’t ask him to stay. I told him if he went to rehab I would go to counseling with him afterward, but promise nothing else. Help! Answer: You didn’t specify if you and your husband were still living together. It sounds as if you aren’t. It sounds like there have been some problems and your relationship has suffered. Are drugs possibly involved? Meth is the hardest to deal with that I know of. I know there are more addicting drugs, but Meth is a psychotic drug. It actually causes psychotic episodes in people who have never had that type of problem before. You also didn’t indicate whether there are children involved. You have to make the best choice given all the information YOU have for yourself (and your family) as well as your husband. If you have been having problems, this may just be a cry for help. Or attention. Now, that we’ve got that out of the way…..Since you are the person who was told about the suicide attempt, you can sign the papers to have him committed.
