The complexity of consent and privacy in biometrics – worldwide

Publication date: September 2019Source: Biometric Technology Today, Volume 2019, Issue 8Author(s): John PetersenIn a recent discussion with an acquaintance, I asked the following privacy question: would it concern you if a biometric template of yourself any biometric was stored by a responsible third party like a bank, healthcare provider or government agency? Interestingly, their reply was cautious, couched with a number of caveats primarily around consent and how securely this template would be stored. This underlying concern was based on the assumption that if the template was somehow stolen, my acquaintance's very existence would be terminally compromised. The answer was not particularly surprising, and I suspect representative of many people's understanding of the nature and use of biometric data.
