Competition and diversity in UK Higher Education-online learning models, alternative providers and the changing shape of the sector

Delegates at this seminar will discuss the implications of the current drive to diversify the provision of Higher Education - including HE being taught in FE colleges, the growth of private universities and degree courses designed by other for-profit bodies and the potential for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). It follows the Government's response to the consultation on Applying Student Number Controls to Alternative Providers with Designated Courses which delayed the imposition of number controls until at least 2014/15 in order to encourage expansion of alternative providers and set out steps to create a 'level-playing field' between traditional universities and new entrants to the market. Sessions will focus on the challenges for existing universities presented by the expansion of Higher Education by alternative providers, the remaining barriers for new entrants to the market and the next steps for Government policy in this area. Topics for discussion include: Developments in distance learning and the advantages and disadvantages presented by new methods of online learning, including Massive Open Online Courses - including plagiarism, online assessment and scalability;The increasing provision of Higher Education within FE colleges - including whether FE colleges or groups of colleges should be given degree-awarding powers;The potential impact the growing number of private universities and for-profit degree courses designed by industry may have on the HE market; andRegul...
