torn lateral meniscus again

I had surgery 8 years ago to prepare a torn lateral meniscus which means I don't have a lot of that cartilage left. A few days ago I reinjured that same knee while playing softball running the bases. The pain is in the exact location of my lateral meniscus and my Dr. seems to think that it could be another tear as well without having an mri yet. Since I don't have much cartilage left would even be worth to go in and clean it up again? My Doctor has discussed with me that a knee replacement will be needed sometime in the future because of the bone on bone lack of cartilage, but we want to hold it off as long as we can since I'm only 34 years old. I am an athlete, and involved in sports and exercise so this is all very frustrating for me. Any suggestions of what I can do?
