Abstract NICE has published new quality standards and commissioning support to help improve the standard of care for people with epilepsy. The updated guide for commissioners focuses on diagnosis, tailoring treatment and review for adults and children with epilepsy. Commissioners must work with a wide range of administrative and clinical partners if they are to achieve the outcomes set out in the NHS, Public Health and Adult Social Care Outcomes Frameworks and the improvement areas in the Clinical Commissioning Group outcomes indicator set. The guide includes two commissioning and budgeting tools to determine local service levels and calculate the cost of commissioning care using indicative benchmarks and/or local data. The new quality standards (QS26 [http://guidance.nice.org.uk/QS26] and QS27 [http://guidance.nice.org.uk/QS27]) define clinical best practice for the diagnosis and management of the epilepsies in adults and children respectively.
