HIVE Southampton’s World AIDS Day Gig – the big finale to their WAD fortnight

The annual World AIDS gig was held on the 14th of December this year, following the HIVE Southampton and Medsin Southampton ‘World AIDS Day Fortnight’. From the 1st of December, these two organisations put on a talk by a Southampton University Professor, a film night and a collection at Sansbury’s in Portswood, to mark World AIDS Day, in an attempt to educate students about the importance of marking World AIDS Day, as well as to raise money for Support for International Change. The finale of the ‘World AIDS Day Fortnight’ kicked off at 7.30pm at the Bridge Bar, Southampton University Student Union. The newly refurbished venue looked fantastic, dressed in the joint World Aids Day/Christmas theme – tinsel, clusters of tea lights and fairy lights added to a great atmosphere. The bar was selling ‘HIVE cocktails’, and a PowerPoint presentation about HIVE, SIC and World AIDS Day played throughout the night on two large projector screens either side of the stage. The music throughout the night was spectacular, including the likes of the Medics Choir, Manband, the Medics Revue, Sara Williams, Hannah Pigney, and Will Swain. Acts performed their own songs, along with a Christmas cover to add to the festive mood. All guests thoroughly enjoyed an evening of fantastic music, and I would say it was a very successful event – raising money for Support for International Change, and raising awareness for World AIDS Day, HIV and AIDS, and of course HIVE Southampton.
