Siemens Shows Off New Ultrasound Systems at ACC

Siemens has unveiled  the 3.0 release of the ACUSON SC2000 system that expands on the automated measurement capabilities of prior versions. Specifically, the system is now capable of using apical 2 and 4 chamber images to automatically trace the left ventricular endocardial border and generate a biplane estimate of ejection fraction. The demonstration provided on the floor at the American College of Cardiology annual meeting provided an accurate estimate within just a few seconds after image acquisition. Estimates of left atrial size are also now automatically calculated in the system. Other additions in the new release include wireless networking and updates for pediatric imaging. Also on display was a novel product, previously covered by Medgadget at RSNA, the Acuson Freestyle. This ultrasound system includes a portable flat panel screen and an all-purpose transducer that communicates wirelessly with the display. Most of the controls for the system can be adjusted through the transducer using two buttons and a slide selector. Wireless communication is on a standalone radio frequency which has thus far not demonstrated any disruption with other RF signals in the tested environments. The system could remove a significant frustration for procedures where having a long cord draped through the operative field is challenging to use without interfering with the procedure or breaking sterility.Read More
