You don't know what you don't know

Visual outcomes are the primary measure of success after cataract surgery. When postoperative follow-up is inconsistent, the quantity and quality of information obtained is compromised. This information gap can handicap our assessments of patient outcomes and limit opportunities for quality improvement. While some studies have argued for the sufficiency of an early follow-up visual acuity measurement and subsequent follow-up visits only for those patients who return without prompting,1 others have presented arguments for more rigorous follow-up and data collection even in low-resource or remote-practice settings.
