Global governance of tobacco in the 21st century

28 February 2013 -- Speaking about the need to strengthen tobacco control, Dr Margaret Chan explained the game-changing significance of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which now has 176 parties. As she noted, a particularly disturbing trend is use by the tobacco industry of international trade and investment agreements as a vehicle to seek enhanced market access and avoid regulation. Such agreements are being exploited to directly challenge tobacco control measures in the courts.
