UK observational study finds association between insulin use and increased risk of adverse outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes

Source: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Area: News According to the results of a UK retrospective cohort study published early online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, use of insulin therapy was associated with an increased risk of diabetes-related complications, cancer, and death in patients with type 2 diabetes, when compared to a reference group of metformin monotherapy. Differences in baseline characteristics between treatment groups should however be considered when interpreting these results.     The authors note that the use of exogenous insulin in people with type 2 diabetes has increased markedly over recent years (from 37,000 in 1991 to an estimated 277,000 in 2010). Although early utilisation has recently been recommended in guidelines from the American Diabetes Association and European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the risk-benefit profile of insulin in the management of people with type 2 diabetes has undergone scrutiny.
