The maternal pre-pregnancy BMI and the risk of ADHD among children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-Analysis. Korean J Pediatr. 2019 Jun 14;: Authors: Jenabi E, Bashirian S, Khazaei S, Basiri Z Abstract This meta-analysis evaluated the association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children and adolescents. The search strategy was conducted until December 2018 in databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus. The ORs or HRs with 95% confidence intervals (CI) extracted from eligible studies used as the common measure of association among studies. A significant association was found between overweight women and risk of ADHD among children with the pooled estimates of HR and OR, respectively (HR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.17 to 1.37) and (OR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.15 to 1.40). Also, this association was significant between obese women and risk of ADHD among children and adolescents with the pooled estimates of HR and OR, respectively (HR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.55 to 1.76) and (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.23 to 1.61). There is sufficient evidence based on the current epidemiological studies that pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity is significantly associated with an increased risk of ADHD among children and adolescents.
