One of the weak links in the chain of healthcare delivery is the disparity between the self evident need for sustained quality teamwork in the clinical environment, and the lack of time spent developing this complex set of competencies. The commercial aviation industry developed the concept of Crew Resource Management to teach situational awareness, improved communication, task distribution, and optimal teamwork. These functions are seen by this industry as vitally important to improve the quality of service delivery and (even more importantly, to me at least) stop errors leading to catastrophic systems failure. Do you think there is any reason why we should not be investing equal energy into our own resource management? Healthcare has been described as being amongst the most complex social systems that exists1. A system operating within a highly technical environment and acted upon by workload, budgetary and political forces that may not always supplement its smooth operation. The only two differences between a catastrophic system failure, or even a system stall in the health system to that of the airline industry is that: 1.
