What about fathers? A review of a fathers’ peer support group on a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Publication date: Available online 4 June 2019Source: Journal of Neonatal NursingAuthor(s): Sarah-Jane ArchibaldAbstractThe following presents the findings of a small-scale pilot study to investigate fathers experiences of attending a support group on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. The group was set-up in January 2018 to enable a safe and supportive space for fathers with a baby on the neonatal unit. Emerging themes are discussed, including the value of the shared group experience, enjoyment and feelings of validation and inclusion of being an active family member. Implications for future clinical practice are addressed, with recommendations for other neonatal units that may be considering running such groups.
