Environment and Alcoholism

How does Alcoholism respond to Environment? We know sobriety responds to environment from the fact that mixing with sober people will encourage sobriety. Therefore it follows’ that moving into surroundings of alcoholic behaviour environment will incline to lead to a reversion in thinking and cause a possible relapse to the AA member. Whilst drinking the alcoholic favours the environment of a lower social scale, in order to boost his faultering ego. Alcoholism, being a progressive illness, forces him lower and lower as his illness progresses. Eventually, he finds himself lower than he cared or intended to go. Environment can also be affected by circumstances, which the alcoholic creates deliberately in order to rationalize his behaviour pattern. This can happen on a conscious or sub-conscious level, but the outcome remains, in all cases, the same. The alcoholic should, at all times, be fully aware of the dangers and also advantages of the various forms of his environment. To cultivate the positive and to reject the negative in his environment is of the utmost importance to every alcoholic’s continued sobriety. We, who have discovered the value of these facts know that a good general does not send his troops to battle merely to prove that they are courageous. So we do not frequent the environment which could cause disaster, but rather cling to the protection of sober AA environment.
