Could pinched nerve in foot cause numbness in leg + advice?

I have been having moderate pain in my left foot where the second toe connects to the ball of my foot for the past 6 days. It was constant at first, but now, while the pain level is the same, I notice it mostly if I'm walking or standing on it. As of yesterday, part of my left shin, down the middle to the inside of the leg, became partially numb. I can tell if someone is touching me there, but it feels as though someone injected Novocaine there. As it hadn't improved by the next evening, I went to a doctor who said I probably pinched a nerve in my foot and it was causing my leg to go numb, and there wasn't anything to do but wait a week. I just thought I'd ask if that would make sense for a pinched nerve in my foot to be causing my left shin to go numb, and whether there was much I could do as I have to work at a job where I have to be walking for long hours. Thanks in advance.
