Role of Brachytherapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer

Brachytherapy, or the technique of placing radioactive material inside or next to an area of cancer, has a long history in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. As early as 100 years ago urologists were using brachytherapy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer in the United States and Europe1. HH Young, a John Hopkins surgeon and the father of many modern urology techniques developed an interstitial brachytherapy technique for placement of radiotherapy isotopes inside the prostate to treat cancer1.
