Gastronomic Tourism— A Way of Supplementing Tourism in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Mehul Krishna KumarAbstractThe purpose of this study is to analyze whether or not gastronomic tourism can be considered as a supplementary form of tourism for Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Further the study aims at analyzing the characteristics of tourist visiting the islands and their perspective about gastronomy in the islands. The methodology of research involved one hundred twenty six travelers on their visit to the Andaman Islands completing a self-administered survey questionnaire. The questionnaires were critically analyzed and the findings revealed a frequency distribution on the sample characteristics and their perception regarding gastronomic tourism in the islands. Further to have a holistic view of gastronomy situation in the islands another set of questionnaires were distributed among the tourism industry players. A total of one hundred eight respondents from the tourism industry gave their perception on gastronomic tourism development in the islands. The results suggested that gastronomic tourism could effectively be molded as a way of supplementing tourism in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The study attempts to provide insights into the aspects of gastronomy as way of tourism destination development.
