Assessing the feasibility of adaptive planning for prostate radiotherapy using Smartadapt deformable image registration

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in the UK [1]. According to Cancer Research UK statistics, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime [2]. External beam radiotherapy is one treatment option available to patients. In our department, RapidArc, which is the Varian implementation of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) developed by Otto [3], is used to treat prostate patients. However, prostate cancer presents several challenges such as inter-and intra-fractional variations in patient set-up and anatomy.
