Putting that cocktail party (effect) on the screen

We've all experienced the "cocktail party effect": We are at a noisy party and we can barely follow the conversation around us, but when someone whispers our name at the other end of the room, we instantly pick it up. How would you put a cocktail party on the screen, using visual stimuli, to study attention and memory?
