Altered overnight levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in men and women with posttraumatic stress disorder

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 8% (Kessler et al., 1995). In addition to severely impairing psychological wellbeing, PTSD is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular, autoimmune and metabolic disorders, and premature mortality (Boscarino, 2006; Cohen et al., 2009, O ’Donovan et al., 2015). Inflammation can drive the development of multiple physical diseases and has been proposed as a mechanism linking PTSD with ill health (O’Donovan et al., 2013).
