We are quite familiar with stark racial disparities in mortality that are due in large part to disparities in death rates from cardiovascular disease.1 We also are well aware of higher rates of hypertension and obesity in blacks versus whites in the United States.2 Less clear, however, are the factors that contribute to these established racial disparities. To this end, George Howard and colleagues conducted an elegant mediation analysis in an effort to identify factors contributing to racial differences in risk of hypertension and to estimate the proportion of back-white differences in hypertension incidence that is attributable to each factor identified.
