Pediatric Disaster Readiness

Imagine waking up after a major hurricane and realizing your dream of losing your child within that storm was not a dream at all. It was real—your child was missing. Alive? Injured somewhere? Dead? Imagine living with this constant guttural need to find your child and not being able to reconnect until 6 months later. Unfortunately, that was a reality for many parents as a result of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This story resonates and serves as a constant reminder for child advocates that preparing for the needs of children as a result of disasters is a critical component to our ability as a community and nation to respond successfully.
