Publication date: Available online 22 November 2018Source: Journal of Integrative MedicineAuthor(s): Preethi MohanAbstractAYUSH is an assembly of medical systems (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) that are practiced in India. There are various faulty notions about its practices. The author perceived one research article published in Journal of Integrative Medicine about the need to integrate AYUSH into the curriculum of allopathy. Integration is an approach open to alternate systems of medicine with other streams for their advancements through research and it explores new horizons of health practices. Integration should be based on certain norms and it should not be open to all. If AYUSH systems were added to the curriculum of allopathy, each and every one was able to practice in the name of integration. Such practices might have an untoward effect for AYUSH. One of the unanticipated consequences of placing AYUSH within allopathy may be the loss of classical formulations, confining AYUSH to patent and proprietary medicines. Out of this concern the author feels it is important to write to the editor with criticism of this article, pointing out some pros and cons of the integration of AYUSH into the curriculum of allopathy.
