Diagnosis and Management of Acute Pain in the Hospitalized Patient

The hospitalist needs to be able to understand the underlying mechanism of pain to aid in diagnosis and targeted therapy to achieve adequate analgesia and minimize or avoid side effects. In this article, the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of acute pain in the inpatient setting are reviewed.
