Wealth Acquisition and Hoarding Addictive Disorder: A Proposed Diagnostic Classification

Inequality in the distribution of wealth is a growing concern in the United States and in many other parts of the world. For the most part, this inequality has been addressed in two ways: (1) laws that limit the growth of such inequality, especially laws governing taxes on income and inheritance, and (2) encouraging philanthropy, often in the context of a spiritual or religious belief system. Neither of these approaches seems to be very effective. Conceptually, each of these approaches attempts to offset what is assumed to be an inherent human trait: greed.
