Motivating People to Sustain Healthy Lifestyles using Persuasive Technology: A Pilot Study of Korean Americans with Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes

Over the past 12 years, the number of people with diabetes has steadily increased to pandemic levels [1]. In the U.S., among people age 30 years or older, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (hereafter diabetes) rose from 8.5% in 1999 –2000 to 11.3% in 2013–2014, while prediabetes almost doubled (from 16.0% to 27.4%). The total number of prescription medications increased from 1.9 to 2.7 per person, and diabetes-specific medications increased from 1.3 to 1.8. Yet despite aggressive pharmacotherapy, the levels of diabetes-rela ted biomarkers (hemoglobin A1C, blood plasma insulin, and glucose) also rose, even though overall sugar consumption at the population level has declined (according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999–2014).
