Gastropexy for prevention of gastric dilatation-volvulus in dogs: History and techniques

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a common and catastrophic disease of large and giant breed dogs. Treatment of GDV includes medical stabilization followed by prompt surgical repositioning of the stomach in its normal anatomic position. In order to prevent reoccurrence, gastropexy is used to securely adhere the stomach to the body wall. Effective gastropexy decreases the recurrence of GDV from as high as 80% to less than 5%. The purpose of this article is to describe the history, indications and techniques for gastropexy.
