Cutting Edge: Emergency Pediatric Surgical Care at Lurie Children's

The maturation of our pediatric emergency medicine program has been accelerated by the 3-mile move to our new, 23-story, state-of-the-art facility in downtown Chicago. The number of annual emergency department (ED) visits at Lurie Children's decreased from 61 500 in 2011 to 52 900 in 2013, an indication that we are less often being used as the back-up or as an alternative for the primary care office. The severity of illness and injuries we presently see has skyrocketed, as evidenced by the hospital admission rate from the ED.
