Finding Them a Spot: A Successful Preliminary Match Curriculum

In the 2018 Match, there were more preliminary general surgery positions available (1363) than there were categorical general surgery positions (1319). It has been this way for the last few years.1 Though some of the preliminary general surgery residents start their year with a position already secured for their following year, most do not. These residents begin their training as a physician with an uncertain future. They are expected to function at the same level as a categorical resident with the added burden of recovering from a disappointing Match and entering the process all over again without full assurance of success.
