Comparative incidence and excess risk of acute kidney injury in hospitalised patients receiving vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam in combination or as monotherapy

Vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam (TZP) are among the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in US hospitals [1,2]. This particular combination of antibiotics may be useful empirically due to the broad Gram-positive activity of vancomycin (i.e. activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and the broad Gram-negative activity of TZP (i.e. activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Given the widespread use of these antibiotics, there is a need for an enhanced understanding of the safety of these two agents in combination or as monotherapy.
