Oropharyngeal foreign body penetrating to carotid space in a child

Penetrating oropharyngeal sharp foreign bodies migrating to carotid space are very rare and may injure neurovascular structures, removal of which is challenging to both surgeon and anesthetist (Incollingo and Shevchenko, 2007; Caldwell, 1936). Here we present an unusual case of a three year child with accidental penetration of blunt object (pen cap) into oropharynx, migrated to carotid space and presented as a swelling in the mid part of posterior triangle of the neck. Diagnostic radiology to know the relationship of the foreign body with carotid artery & IJV, difficulties in intubation and surgical approach to remove the foreign body are discussed here.
