Challenges Affecting School-Based SLPs ’ Work With Children Age 5 and Younger: More than a third of preschool SLPs surveyed cited changing eligibility criteria that exclude children who need services.

In a recent ASHA survey, SLPs in preschools and elementary schools identified issues that affect their work with children age 5 and younger. For preschool SLPs, the top issues included changing eligibility criteria that exclude children who need services (36 percent), parents who are not open to coaching (30 percent), a lack of qualified providers to deliver services, and inadequate reimbursement or funding for services (24 percent each).
