Cystic fibrosis, body composition, and health outcomes: a systematic review
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disease that is caused byrecessive mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene, which cause altered transport of chloride, bicarbonate, and sodium ions across the epithelial cell membranes [1]. The phenotypic manifestations of this dysfunction are abnormal fluid transport and accumulation of thick mucus in different organs such as the liver, pancreas, intestines, and lungs [2].
