Physiological effects of a short-term lifestyle intervention based on the Mediterranean diet: comparison between older and younger healthy, sedentary adults
One's health is determined by many different factors (e.g., genetic, environmental, and lifestyle). Nutrition is a major modifiable factor that contributes to one's health and disease risk. The risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) increases with age, but ∼50% of the adult population and 30% of children are considered at high risk for developing CVD [1]. Additionally, events such as menopause, which causes a decline in estrogen (which has detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system), increase the risk for developing CVD in postmenopausal women [2].
