Early clinical complete blood count changes in severe burn injuries

It has been well established that following a severe burn injury, there is a progressive anemia caused by dilution from resuscitation, blood loss from open wounds, and hemolysis [1]. Additionally, other cells in the plasma such as white blood cells (WBC) and platelets (PLT) can either be abnormally high or low following a severe burn injury as a result of systemic inflammation [2,3]. These changes are well known and impact resource utilization, such as blood product transfusion, and impact clinical and surgical decision-making [4].
