Predictors of Resistant Alcohol Withdrawal (RAW): A Retrospective Case-Control Study

It has been estimated that 13.8 million Americans (7.4% of the adult population) meet the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence as specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Bayard et al., 2004). In medical practice, the prevalence of alcohol abuse or dependence has been estimated at upwards of 20% of hospitalized patients (McKeon et al., 2008). Alcohol withdrawal syndromes (AWS) are common in these hospitalized patients, developing in one-half of those not treated prophylactically (Spies et al., 2003).
