Cannabis use during alcohol treatment is associated with alcohol-related problems one-year post-treatment

Alcohol and cannabis co-use is prevalent, with cannabis being the most commonly used drug among drinkers (Falk et al., 2008). Results from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, N  = 43,093 ) show that approximately 22.5% of individuals with AUD use cannabis, less than 10% use other drugs (Falk et al., 2008), and 60% or more use tobacco (Chen et al., 2006). NESARC findings also indicate that cannabis use can exacerbate alcohol effects, subsequently increasing the risk of alcohol-related problems and alcohol use disorder (AUD) (Blanco et al., 2016).
