In conclusion, hyperuricemia is associated with structural and metabolic modifications of HDL that result in impaired fu nctionality of these lipoproteins. Our data strongly suggest that uric acidper se exerts deleterious effects on HDL that contribute to increase the risk of atherosclerosis.
